Mat's Review:

First published in 1909, this is a valuable little book for the homesteader on a budget. Some of the sketches are for absurd little devices that are more amusing than practical, but most are for handy constructions that could come in useful if one wanted (or had to) do things for oneself. Illustrations include chicken coops, cistern filters, miter boxes, stump pullers, grain bins, cheese making, fleecing, farm gates, and more. Mostly simple sketches, so don’t expect any detailed do-it-yourself plans or complete written instructions.

Mat's Review:

This is a very inspiring, practical, well illustrated, “how-I-did-it” book written by Anna Edey, who developed her own version of “bio-benign living design” and in the late 1970’s built a solar home and solar greenhouse on a cold, cloudy New England island (Martha’s Vineyard) where people said it couldn’t be done. Not only did she do it, both structures performed better than she had imagined in every way, from requiring no more heat in the greenhouse (even when it was -4F outside!) than was provided by the limited winter sun plus one hundred chickens and thirty angora rabbits, to creating a lush semi tropical interior living space, to providing an abundance of superior quality vegetables and garden greens year round. This produce provided Anna with an outstanding organic diet plus a generous income earned through selling her exceptional produce to upscale Bostonian and Martha’s Vineyard restaurants. As a green builder, I found her flush toilet composting system quite interesting, since some of my off-grid friends have stated that composting toilets are the least favored appliances in their green homes. Our current “modern” sewage treatment practice using septic systems in suburban areas causes high volumes of nitrates to leach into public waters and aquifers, polluting drinking waters and disrupting ecosystems. Anna’s alternate systems (utilized in other commercial structures in addition to her farm and home) capture these pollutants and remove them from her waste water, utilizing them instead as natural fertilizers for her bountiful gardens.

Mat's Review:

A very practical book by a long time grower, ex commercial seedsman, and someone who has lived for many years with little income eating mainly what grew in his own garden, so his garden had to produce or he went hungry. Having worked with the Jeavons biointensive approach for a number of years, this author’s experiences growing crops for his seed business persuaded him to change his methods to improve yields with less water consumption and fewer soil amendments. A good book for starting your first garden, or a fine addition to your gardening library

Mat's Review:

Back in 1965, when Eliot Coleman began farming organically, the common belief was that organic farming couldn’t possibly compete with farms using chemical pesticides and fertilizers. Through hard work, careful observation, experimentation, and continuous practical innovation, Eliot proved them wrong. This is an excellent handbook for the serious gardener or small-scale grower, filled with practical advice from an expert who learned by doing, and by doing it well. If you were to buy just a single book on organic gardening, you could not go wrong with this one!

An excellent book for those living in temperate zones, like the northern United States, Southern Canada, or UK. This is a detailed advanced permaculture handbook, along the lines of Mollison’s Designer’s Guide, but specifically focused on wetter and colder climates.
